ADR Refresher

Why is a Refresher Course Necessary?

To Renew the ADR Certificate: The primary purpose is to renew the driver's ADR certificate for another five years.

  • To Stay Compliant with Regulations: ADR regulations are updated periodically. The refresher course ensures drivers are up-to-date with any changes to the rules for handling, documentation, and safety procedures.
  • To Maintain Safety Standards: It reinforces the driver's knowledge of the risks involved, emergency protocols (like using fire extinguishers and first aid), and the correct way to load, unload, and secure dangerous goods.

Key Aspects of an ADR Refresher Course

  • Timing: To be eligible for a refresher course, a driver must have their existing ADR certificate and take the course and pass the exams within the last 12 months of its validity.
  • Validity Window: It's crucial to have at least 1 Day of validity left on the current ADR card on the day of the last exam. If the certificate expires, the driver cannot take a refresher and must instead complete the full, longer initial training course again.
  • Course Content: The refresher course revisits the core knowledge and the specific modules the driver holds, such as:
    • Core: General principles of ADR.
    • Packages: Transporting goods in smaller containers.
    • Tanks: Transporting goods in tankers.
    • Classes: The specific classes of dangerous goods (e.g., flammable liquids, corrosives) that the driver is qualified to carry

Duration: Refresher courses are shorter than the initial training. A typical course might last 2 days with exams on day 3.

Exams: Just like the initial course, the refresher training concludes with multiple-choice exams for each module and class. Passing these exams is a prerequisite for a new certificate to be issued.

Driver CPC Hours:

ADR refresher courses are approved by the relevant authorities (like JAUPT in the UK) and can count towards a driver's periodic Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training hours. A refresher course may count for up to 14 hours of Driver CPC.
