Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. It's a mandatory qualification for professional lorry, bus, and coach drivers across the UK and Europe. The aim is to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving throughout a driver's career.
Two Main Types of Driver CPC
There are two ways a driver obtains and maintains their Driver CPC:
- Initial Qualification: This is for new drivers who are just starting their career. They must pass a series of four tests in addition to their vocational driving license tests. These include theory tests (multiple choice and hazard perception) and practical tests (driving ability and vehicle safety demonstration). Once they pass these, they receive their first Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
- Periodic Training: This is for all professional drivers who already have their Driver CPC. To keep the qualification valid, they must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years. This training is delivered through a variety of courses and does not involve a pass or fail exam. The purpose is to keep drivers up-to-date with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
Key Aspects of Periodic Training
- Duration: Drivers must complete a total of 35 hours of training over a five-year period. The training is typically delivered in modules, with each module lasting a minimum of 3.5 or 7 hours.
- Content: The training covers a wide range of topics to enhance a driver's skills and knowledge, including:
- Drivers' hours and tachograph use
- Health and safety (e.g., manual handling, first aid)
- Fuel-efficient driving techniques
- Road traffic laws and regulations
- Safe loading and securing of cargo
- Customer service and communication
- Flexibility: Drivers can choose from a wide range of approved courses to meet their 35-hour requirement. Many training providers offer both in-person and online "virtual classroom" sessions.
- Driver Qualification Card (DQC): Once a driver has completed their 35 hours of periodic training, a new DQC is automatically issued. This card serves as proof of their qualification and must be carried with them at all times while driving professionally.
- Penalties: Driving professionally without a valid DQC is illegal and can result in significant fines.
